African Blackwood Carving

There is a tradition of using African Blackwood off cuts to make beautiful art. The blackwood tree has an inner heartwood core which is black and an outer lighter core which is lighter in colour. Both types of wood are extremely hard and very rare. The blackwood tree of which there are many varieties take about 70 to 100 years to grow and reach a maximum of 15m. Due to aggressive logging and their high value the tree is becoming very scarce. Traditionally the wood was used in clarinets bagpipes etc. The offcuts were never wasted and odd lumps are expertly carved by experienced artists to depict human figures or heads. We have always collected the best of these examples and have a new one to sell. It is approx 27cm height and weighs 0.65 kg
